The May Recap | ft. finally reading six of crows (!!), podcasts and yoga

Guys!! Being back to blogging means getting to write a recap and I am so!! happy about that because these are always my favourite posts to write because I can just ramble??
I’m even pre-writing this post a week or so in advance which just shows how (strangely organised and) excited I am.

What books did I read in May?

Firstly: the books I read (and mostly loved!) I read 6 books in May which I’m actually pretty proud of?! I’ve only recently got my reading mojo back and I am so thankful for that because I’ve really missed getting stuck into a good book. & there were also 2.5 five star reads which is amazing??

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (reread before Crooked Kingdom!!) ★★★★★
Easiest 5 stars ever given. You all shouted at me to read Six Of Crows in this blog post and it was the push I needed to FINALLY get to it. And I’m so glad I did because this duology holds my favourite books ever.

Cooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo ★★★★
Oh my!! I don’t know if I loved this even more than book 1 & I am so obsessed with this crew?! The plot was also all over the place (in a good way) with so many twists that I didn’t see coming. I just adore this duology so so much. If you haven’t read it, don’t be like me – read it.
Even if the blurb doesn’t hugely appeal to you (which is why I put it off I won’t lie)
JUST READ IT (please).

Click here to see my SPOILER thoughts I have so many thoughts about these characters. Firstly MATTHIAS. NO NO NO. Was genuinely in shock because I totally believed that they would all survive? I was not ready. I cried. I’m not surprised. Next. Kaz and Inej, Kaz and Inej ❤ My heart is bursting. HE BOUGHT HER A WHOLE SHIP. And they're my no.1 ship too ;). And Wylan and Jesper. The freaking cutest. I saw that Leigh Bardugo said her final plans for the series included a third book. But as much as I want to read more about Ketterdam and the crew… I don't because the ending (apart from Matthias oh my) was happy??

Political Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction by David Miller ★★★☆
This was a read for school recommended by my teacher, and even though I didn’t expect to like it, I actually did? I take Philosophy as one of my A-levels and also find politics so interesting (and incredibly infuriating I won’t lie) so this was actually a really interesting combination. There was also loads of analogies which made it so easy to understand which I was very grateful for.

Last Chance by Sarah Dessen ★★☆☆☆ (2.5, maybe 3 if I’m being generous)
I honestly don’t think I liked this one. It wasn’t awful but I just didn’t love it. It felt like nothing really happened (even with character progression etc) and I just didn’t care about the main character at all (can’t even remember her name oops).
I also really struggled with the ages of characters?? I have no idea how old she is or how old her friends are, and the love-interest I thought was like a 30 year-old man (he’s not – he’s 18) for a lot of the book so I was a bit confused and found it a bit weird :)).
I flew through it quickly (thankfully) though?

Yes, No, Maybe So by Becky Abertalli and Aisha Saeed ★★★☆ (4.5, considering making it 5)
This just screamed single at me really. Jamie and Maya were the cutest. So there’s that. As someone who loves politics, I also really enjoyed the shade to Donald Trump and think the messages in it of not sitting back and using your voice as a teen were really good and important. Can definitely see this becoming a comfort read (along with every other Abertalli book apart from Leah because I still can’t decide if I want to read it 🙂).

Theatrical by Maggie Harcourt ★★★☆
I actually really loved this one! I absolutely love musical theatre (and did performing arts for about 8 years) so the theatre setting just made me so nostalgic and happy. Can see this one becoming a comfort read? I did hit a patch about 60% in though where it felt a bit too long? Which also happened with Maggie’s other book Unconventional. Just felt it could maybe be like 30-40 pages shorter than it is – I like my contemporaries about 350 pages (but that’s probably just a reflection on me not the book haha).

My Lifestyle Faves

  • I’ve been doing Yoga With Adriene‘s free videos on YouTube for over two years or so now (pretty much daily) and I so!! recommend!! I also signed up to the Find What Feels Good membership after thinking about it for a while which I’m quite excited about.
  • Taylor Swift!! I’ve always loved Taylor Swift but then stopped listening to her music (purely because musicals were all I listened to). But this month I’ve been listening to my Taylor playlist non-stop and am loving it!
  • Podcasts I never used to listen to podcasts either but now I love them! They’re so great for motivation and feeling productive which is great to put on whilst I’m doing work. I’ll probably do a post on my faves soon so let me know if you want to see that!

On the blog:

May featured the revival of A Literary Latte!!
I redesigned the blog (although the colour scheme is still the same because I love this pastel teal colour) and started using Pinterest images for the aesthetic so it’s been really fun!
I’ve written quite a few blog posts that are scheduled and ready to go up, so I’m so glad my blogging mojo has returned!
In the mean time, feel free to catch up on my latest blog posts!

I also set up a book twitter and am going to start using it so do follow me over there! I’m @aliterarylatte.

My goals for June

  • Work on my mental health I have a really specific goal that I want to work on here. I feel like my mindset with this aspect of my anxiety has kind of shifted in the last few days and so I really want to continue improving with it.

  • Grow my Instagram I hate having to be so vague here sorry!! But I want to continue growing my Instagram for an online business (I do graphic design/illustration!) and maybe reach 1700 followers?
Also I’ve had this business/Instagram since December last year so it’s not a recent thing, I’ve just never mentioned it!

  • Go for more regular walks We’re allowed ‘unlimited exercise’ in the UK now but am I making use of that? Ha, nope. I haven’t been outside for over a week oops. Might as well be a vampire these days. But I need that Vitamin D so my aim is to go for more walks next week! I have been exercising though because I’ve been doing the Bailey Brown 5 minute workouts (combining a number of them for one quick and effective workout so I recommend!).
  • Revise for my Year 12 (online) mock exams I have exams (which will be used for my university applications/ predicted grades, which is kind of scary) at the end of June so I need to get revising for them! I was meant to this half-term but my teacher set a crazy amount of homework (which I haven’t done & is all overdue on Teams::)) so I’ve really not had time. I’ve also had little to no motivation this week which is completely different to how I was feeling when I wrote this post (just for transparency!)

And that’s all that really happened this month! Hope you enjoyed reading this post and sorry it’s kind of short? But lockdown means nothing exciting is really happening these days ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What was your fave book that you read in May? Have you read any of the books I’ve mentioned (please tell me you’ve read Six of Crows!!) & What are your fave podcasts?

    1. Love love loved it!! I’ll definitely be rereading these books so often because I adore them and cannot believe it took me so freaking long to get to them.
Do you know I actually think Reputation is my fave as well – I just totally forgot how good those songs are?? I definitely did not appreciate the album enough when it was released. And yes Lover is definitely such a close contender too – have you seen the City of Lover concert?
Yes!! I need to get more vitamin D honestly – especially because the weather has been so lovely. I just have no energy these days?? Even though I’m literally doing nothing apart from sitting at my desk??
Thanks for reading and commenting Isla! & Hope you have a great June as well! ❤

  2. Again, I’m so glad to have met fellow SoC trash 🥺 the Six of Crows duology is my lifeblood!! I’m really excited to see book three, and I hope we see the Dregs as adults because that’d be so cool. But it really won’t be the same without Matthias. I think it was fitting that he was killed by someone who was so like his past bigoted self though.
wishing you the best June! I hope you meet all your goals and that your mental health will improve ❤ ❤

    1. No same!! I can’t believe I’ve only just read them (after being on my tbr for literal years) because I am now so obsessed? I’m so excited for a book 3 and yes!! That would be so cool to see. I’m so nervous though because I don’t want anything bad to happen to them?!
& Yes I agree with that – it definitely made sense with his character but it still broke me. I was genuinely so convinced it would be a happy ending for them all.
Thanks so much Caitlin & hope you have a great June! xx

  3. Ahh, yay for Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom!! You made me want to reread them because I love all those characters so much.💛My favorite is Jesper but like they’re all precious and individual which I LOVE!! I want to read Yes, No, Maybe So so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it~ I hadn’t heard too much about it until now but that’s probably me living under a rock a bit, haha. YES Taylor Swift!! She’s my absolute fave.🥺I’ve been listening to her even more this month as well, I love her throwback songs and recent ones so, so much. I’ve recently been realizing just how much of a masterpiece Reputation is. Congrats on your blog redesign, it looks amazing!! I hope you have the most wonderful June, Emme! xx

    1. They’re literally my all-time fave book characters for sure which is such a bold statement but also true?? I’m so mad at myself for not reading this series earlier haha. My fave would probably be Kaz but I love them all, it’s so hard to choose?
& Same actually, I’ve only seen one review for it but it was 99p on Kindle for a little while so I just bought it on a whim and didn’t know that much about it. I did enjoy it though – was a nice, light & fluffy contemporary (although still with quite a political-focus) so was literally perfect for me. Hope you enjoy it if you do get round to it!
SAME. When Reputation came out I loved it but also did not appreciate those songs enough because I’m only just realising just how good they are?! I can’t decide which album of hers is my fave though? Either Reputation or Lover probably, but Red is also a strong contender for the nostalgia.
Ahh thanks so much!! Hope your June goes great as well! ❤

  4. I really need to pick up Six of Crows!! Been sitting on my shelf since it came out!
It’s nice to know you enjoyed Yes, No, Maybe So. I was on the fence with it but recent reviews I saw kind of convinced me that I should really pick it up 🙂
Good luck with all your goals! I’ve been hoping to get into graphic design/illustration business but I’m still not that confident with what I can do.

    1. Please please please read it!! Cannot recommend it enough honestly – haven’t shut up about it since I finished the series haha.
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised with that one! I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it – quite a light/fluffy read so was just a nice & relaxed reading experience.
Thanks so much! & I’d honestly I’d say just go for it if you want to!! I was far from the best haha when I started but it’s only been 6 months or so and I’ve improved loads. It’s all practice at the end of the day but has been so rewarding ❤
      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  5. I read and loved Six of Crows and considered it the perfect YA out there! I never managed to convince myself to try out Crooked Kingdom out of fear that it wouldn’t live up to expectations but you’re making me doubt myself now hahaha! I’ll have to fix that soon. Hope June will allow you to meet your goals and outdo yourself! Happy reading as well! 😀

  8. I’ve tried reading Six of Crows like, three times? But I always set it aside and return it to the library *melts* I’ll get to one day, maybe! 😂 But YES to yoga! I started doing it every week during quarantine and absolutely love it. Boho Beautiful is another favorite yoga channel if you ever get a chance to check her out. 🙂 Have a wonderful June!

  9. YAY on finishing the six of crows duology! i took quite a long time to finish this duology, with i think a year between book 1 and book 2. but i’m really glad i did it, because it is phenomenal indeed! the writing style is sooo good and atmospheric and i love how character-driven it is as well. i agree that i wouldn’t want more from this world because i’m scared they will ruin the semi-happy ending we got, hahah. i really fell in love with kai and inej in this second book, but nina/matthias is still my ride or die, even though the outcome was rather tragic for them, lol.
it makes me happy seeing you’re back in a taylor mood! she’s my #1 favorite artist and i was really looking forward to watching her live for the first time this year, but sadly because of covid, the concert was postponed. but let me know your favorite songs from lover & reputation!
wishing you all the luck on your june goals!

    1. yess it’s so good! it took me about 6 months to get to book 2 but this series and the characters!! I just🥰🥰
i’m sorry you missed out that sucks! hopefully she’ll rearrange once everything’s allowed to resume, whenever that is! from lover it’s 100% cruel summer – love them all but cruel summer is just SO good.
and reputation it’s so hard to choose?? i’d say either don’t blame me, end game or king of my heart. or getaway car? idk!! what about you?
& thanks so much for reading and commenting Lais! hope you have a great june too!

  10. Hooray I’m so happy that you loved Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom! 😀 I felt the same way when I read it – I didn’t realize that there was any way the second book could possibly be better than the first but somehow it was?? Just amazing.
And I also loved Yes No Maybe So! 😀 Such an inspiring and sweet book.
Good luck with all of your goals in June, and happy reading!

  11. Welcome back, Emme!!! I’m so loving the new look of your – it’s so elegant & clean, but still with a nod to your original design 😍 AHHHH YES JOIN THE SOC BANDWAGON!!! Honestly what an amazing & kick-ass crew – I really need to re-read the entire Grisha series, especially with the Netflix series coming out 😍

OMG AND WELCOME BACK TO TAYTAY FANGIRLING AS WELL! What’s your favourite album by her or is it too hard to pick? 😂 She’s such a queen 💛💛💛

Hope you’re having a lovely June so far & looking forward to reading more posts from you!

    1. Thanks so much Ngoc!! ❤
I so wish I'd joined the bandwagon earlier!! I'm so obsessed with those books and characters honestly. I need to read the Grisha books actually, I haven't got to them yet – especially if there's a Netflix show, I didn't know about that?!
Ahh picking a fave is so hard!! I think at the moment it's Reputation?! Ever since I watched the stadium tour I've just fallen so in love with it. What about you?
And thank you! Hope you have a great June too! 🙂

      1. Yes, I think you can find photos of the cast already – I’m not sure how far into filming they were when COVID 19 hit but I’m really excited for it regardless!

YESSSS I got to watch her Reputation concert in Perth & my GOD it was flawless 😍 I think my fave is either 1989 or Lover! 😊
